I began shaping boards for myself and friends in the late 60's. This
was a unique time in surfboard design. Long boards were out and short
boards were in. The Australian designed boards influenced me the most.
I began shaping short egg style surfboards. I was able to sell custom
boards for $25 each. It was a fun time. Now you can order boards from
that era. Check out our surfboards from the 70's section.
My contest surfing was noticed by Gordon & Smith Surfboards and
I was picked to be on the surf team. I rode mostly Skip Frye models.
These boards were the best and are still the best boards around. Skip's
shapes influenced me a lot.
I began shaping boards for G&S. I've
shaped a lot of boards over the years and I still
make them one at a time. Each board counts. When
you're dropping in on an overhead Barrel deep in Baja, I want you
to have nothing but confidence in your board and in your shaper.
Thanks,
Tony Staples
